Giraffes

Help Our Giraffes

Giraffes are the tallest living mammals on earth standing at heights between 14-19 feet tall. Giraffes live in savannahs, grasslands and open woodlands across Africa. However, giraffe numbers are dwindling due to poaching and habitat loss. There are currently nine subspecies of giraffe. Research shows that two of the species are listed as Endangered- including the Rothschild’s giraffe. Raising awareness, carrying out research, education and conservation are some steps that can help secure the future of these long-necked gentle giants.

Current Project

Saving Giraffes

The Uganda Conservation Foundation is an organization operating in Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP)- an area in Africa that includes the native range of Rothschild giraffes. According to the Uganda Wildlife Authority Census Report of 2012- MFNP includes approximately 700 Rothschild’s giraffe individuals. The Uganda Conservation Foundation helps the giraffes by removing illegal snares set by poachers. These snares are not targeting giraffes, however they get easily caught in them. Rothschild giraffes also face a skin disease that is causing hair loss. The Sea World Busch Gardens Conservation Fund is supporting a study to help etiology scientists determine the cause and origins of the disease.
