Brown Pelican

There are seven species of Pelicans in the world, but only Brown Pelicans dive for their meals. And it’s a pretty steep drop – they sometimes dive from 70 ft. (21.5 m) up. That’s like jumping off a 7-story building just to catch dinner, ouch! The brown pelican has tiny sacs of air beneath its skin help to cushion the impact, so it’s not painful for them. Up until recently these daring  divers faced extinction from chemical toxins in the food supply that made the shells of their eggs brittle. Now, they’re up against habitat loss, pollution, and oil spills too. Sea World helps to rehabilitate pelicans that were tangled in fishing lines and cut on hooks. You can help, too, by not throwing trash in waterways and recycling fishing line.
